And The Winner Is..........
Mansfield - State Champs!!!
The showdown
between St. John's Prep and Mansfield proved to be just
that, as the two top teams from the MA East Div 1 and
Ma East Div 2
came face to face in the State Championship, which is broken
down to two overall divisions (Div 1 and Div 2 are in the
State Div 1 race, while Div 3 and Div 4 are in the State Div
2 race).
It was the superb running of Shayne Collins, in the hunt for
top five for most of the race, the return of junior Patrick
McGowan (missed the Division meet due to a knee injury) and
the tough running of senior Patrick Grimes, junior Brendan
Boyle and junior Matt Hernon that won it for the Hornets.
Grimes ran 18 seconds faster than last week, while Boyle and
Hernon ran comparable times to last week that enabled
Mansfield to counter each runner from the Prep.
McGowan, who spent almost three weeks doing pool running and
elliptical biking to rehab his knee, was able to return to
top form, finishing 13th overall and 8th in the team race.
Boyle and Hernon managed to stay just about even with their
4th and 5th Prep competitors to cement the win. Boyle was
one spot behind St. John's Prep 4th runner and Hernon was
two spots ahead of the 5th Prep runner.
Thus, it was
consistency and team running that brought out the best in
the Hornets, leading to the best season in the history of
the program. Highlights included an undefeated dual
meet season, winner of the Hockomock League Championship,
winner of the Brown Invitational, winner of the
Massachusetts Division 2 East Championship and now, State
Massachusetts Division 1 Champions. Great Job!!
Congratulations to a most successful season for the
Hornets, as they went undefeated all year, quite an
accomplishment for this outstanding and dedicated group of

MIAA EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS DIVISIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Saturday Nov. 8, 2008 Franklin Park, Boston MA
For the third year in the last four, Mansfield comes home
with the championship title for the Eastern MA Division 2.
Led by Sophomore Shayne Collins, whose proud mom is also the
coach, the Hornets returned to the top rung after finishing
second last year. Mansfield overcame the loss of Pat McGowan,
who was the lead runner for the previous two championship meets,
in winning with a total of 94 points. Whitman-Hansen was
second with 110, North Andover was third with 145 points and
Reading finished fourth with 163 points. The team of
Collins, Kevin Meagher, Brendan Boyle, Patrick Grimes and Matt
Hernon all finished in the top 30. Josh Brodin and Joe
Cole finished out the team performances, placing 62 and 67.
Franklin was the next best Hockomock team, finishing in sixth

The Hockomock Invitational Meet provided an opportunity for the
second tier Mansfield cross country runners to be exposed to some
good racing experience. Led by Josh Brodin and Joe Cole, who
normally run with the Varsity group, some new faces are starting to
emerge for the future. Nate Michener ran a super race in
finishing third for the Hornets and 31st overall. Tommy
Cunningham, Matt Cioe and Alex Armstrong also put together nice
performances to help the team finish fourth overall.

Mansfield Continues Winning Ways at Brown Invitational

Mansfield boys cross country continued to move forward in their
quest for a state title, venturing out of state for the first time today
to compete against some strong teams from Rhode Island, New York, New
Jersey and Massachusetts. Their success again was due to a
tremendous team effort as a solid pack run enabled the team to win the
title from McKee Staten Island Tech by one point (72-73). Led by
Patrick McGowan for the second race in a row, the group managed to stay
within 30 seconds of each other from McGowan (who finished 8th) and
Brendan Boyle (23rd place). In between Shayne Collins (12),
Patrick Grimes (14) and Kevin Meagher (15) ran impressively.

Hockomock League Championship Meet Won By Mansfield XC Team
The Mansfield Boys Cross Country team ran true to form as they were
able to place four runners in the top five. Mike Moverman of
Oliver Ames ran a very strong race from the front, outdistancing the
entire field in winning by 45 seconds, but the Hornet foursome of
Patrick McGowan (running his best race of the season), Shayne Collins,
Kevin Meagher and Patrick Grimes maintained a solid pack that could not
be touched by the other teams. Kevin Meagher showed signs that he
is coming back as he finished a strong fourth with Patrick Grimes right
behind him in fifth. Moverman's teammate, Joe Curreri finished a
solid sixth place, a scant three seconds ahead of Franklin's Jon Dacey.
Mansfield had a team total of 25 point, half that of second place Oliver
Ames (50). Franklin finished third with 72 points.
