Shayne Collins got the ball rolling for the Hornets with his impressive 2 mile win in 9:07 (courtesy of George Rizor)

The team functioned on all eight cylinders as expected points came to fruition and some unexpected points added to the final total, making it an overwhelming win for the Hornets.

Shayne Collins began the afternoon-evening meet with a resounding win in the 2 mile, although it looked like an upset was in the making.  Keiran Kinnare of Ipswich decided to up the ante, so to speak, taking over the lead after the first mile only to then be overtaken by Chris Allen of King Philip, who has had a terrific outdoor season.  Collins hung on, desperate at times and then hammered down over the last 400 to win over a very determined Allen.  Both runners ran under 9:10. Shayne finished with a hard earned 9:07.42.

The 400 intermediate hurdlers provided Ryan Petrella an opportunity to "contribute to the teams success" as he would say after the race.  Getting out a little slowly, but then making a strong move over the 7th and 8th hurdle, Ryan finished 5th overall.

Josh Lampron was the odds on favorite in the 800, but he almost put himself in great difficulty as he was pushed around, almost forcing him off the inside first turn.  Lampron made two quick, decisive moves that got him back in the comfort of first place and then blazed a 54.3 first 400.  Those two efforts seemed to take some of the "spunk" out of him and it looked like it would be a very close finish.  Coming down the homstretch, though, Josh kept his form very nicely and won his specialty in a time of 1:54.03

The 400 provided a nice showcase for Mansfield's two juniors, Nick King and Griffin Robertson.  Both have been improving throughout the outdoor season and ran a very competitive race, finishing 3rd (King) and 5th (Robertson).  Both got out a little slower than they wanted to and were a bit surprised to see Nathan Pierre-Louis of Waltham leading the pack at the 300 mark, along with Isaiah Penn of Newton North.  Despite determined efforts by both King and Robertson, they could not overtake either runner.  The two places were good for 10 points, which now brought Mansfield very quickly up to 30 points.

Jeremy Burke had a terrific day in the triple jump, taking over for Jeff Hill, who just missed the finals.  Burke jumped a personal best of 44-5.5 and placed 6th overall, pickup some well deserved 3 points for the team.

The 4x800 team managed to hang on for 7th place as Nate Somes (2:02), Kham Haleudeth (2:04), Shayne Collins (2:03) and Josh Lampron (1:57)  (splints from memory) ran from pure desire and determination.

The 4x400 relay team of Ryan Petrella (51.0), Nick King (49.5), Griffin Robertson (50.0) and Steve Gannon (49.3) ended the day on a high note as they set a school record of 3:20.02 . They won by about 4 seconds, so a great finish for the team.

Mansfield had one great day of competition and came home with a very nice plaque.

Congratulations to a group of guys that worked very hard, had lots of good chemistry and were a classy group that had fun winning everything they could this outdoor season.
