In
what one might consider a slight upset based on pre meet scoring
figures, the Mansfield Girls stood tall against a very strong and
tenacious North Attleboro team, hanging very tough throughout the
competition and then scoring big in the last two events (high jump and
4x400) to defeat North by a very close 54-41 score.
The meet got off to a very nice start as Jen Esposito ran away from
North standout Sydney Bennet in the high hurdles. Esposito led
from the start and never looked back as she recorded a very fast 8.39
victory against Bennett's 8.99. Sophmores Kelsey Ferreira (9.02)
and Sabina Pray (9.28) followed closely behind.
The 55 meters was another issue entirely. Senior Briana (Chi Chi)
Chiusano, the pre meet favorite was thrown out of the event as she
false started. However, freshman Abby Broyles came to the rescue
as she held off Samantha Kroll right at the tape to win the 55 in 7.62
over Kroll's 7.63. The win held the point spread close
enough that Mansfield could remain in the competition. Chiusano
did manage to score a third place in the long jump after the 55
mishap.
The mile was next and Sami Carey did not disappoint as she continues to
improve every week. In fact, not only did Carey win (5:45.53),
but teammate and senior Kristina Rothchild ran a personal best of
5:48.32 to take a third away from a good North distance crew.
The two Mansfield distance stars came back later in the meet to go 1-2
in the 2 mile against two fresh North runners, giving Mansfield the
opportunity to come home a winner with their good performances in the
high jump and 4x400.
Along the way, another excellent performance was turned in by Jen
Esposito as she broke up a good North twosome in the 600, recording a
state leading 1:36.82 in the 600. Following that outstanding
performance junior Kelly McGee ran the race of her young life as she
fought back and forth over the last 200 meters with North's Hannah
McCarthy, coming out the winner with a personal best of 3:19.18 for the
1000 meters.
In the high jump Esposito completed her trifacta with a win at 4-8,
followed by a third place finish by Caitlin Finnerty. Those 6
points and the big win by the team of Abby Broyles (64.1), Ashley
Bjorkman (63.0), Maddie Oldow (62.8) and Julia Jones (61.2) for a state
leading 4:11.21. Jones also won the 300 and Oldow ran a personal
best of 1:42.41 for an important 3rd in the 600.
Overall, the girls did a terrific job against one of the best teams in
the league this year. Both teams competed very well against each
other and generated a great deal of excitement for both sides.
Mansfield's dual meet season will continue with one more meet next
Thursday against King Philip, again taking place at Boston U.
