Thanks to Bonnie Frazier....
Cliffhanger won by Girls 49-37The team meeting on Friday, in preparation for the meet against North Attleboro, spelled out what the girls were up against when they were to compete Saturday at Franklin High. The North Attleboro Rocketeers where going to be very, very tough to beat. Mansfield was going to have to work extremely hard to offset the strength that North Attleboro had in the shot put, middle distances and distance events. On paper, the match up was perfect for a meet that would not be won until the final event. The leadership of the older Mansfield girls proved to be the turning point as the Hornets were facing defeat for sure, with only the 1000, 300, and 2 mile and 4 x 400 relay still to come. Early in the meet, Lauren Columbare our standout cross country runner made a triumphed return to competition after sustaining an injury at the state xc championships. She easily won the mile for the Hornets, getting very valuable points for the Green and White. Junior Jess Grainger was another surprise, finishing second to Columbare. The 300 was no surprise as junior Jen Esposito exploded out of the blocks and ran away from a very good competitor in Samantha Kroll. Briana Chiusano won her section of the 300, as well, to garner an additional point with a third place finish. Now, though, North Attleboro had the upper hand. Their distance group had been running very well all fall and in earlier meets. Mansfield needed to squeeze some points out of the 1000 and 2 mile and win the relay, to maintain their precarious lead (10 points). Meghan Cole came through with a big 2nd place finish in the 1000 meters. Then Katie Dempsey ran a super 2 mile to get second place as well, thus securing a win for the Hornets. The Green and White still had one more round left, as it's 4x400 relay team ran a super race, with anchor Britt Greene holding off Nicole Sarkis over the last lap to pick up 5 insurance points. Sarkis had easily won the 600 earlier in the meet. In the beginning of the meet, the hurdle crew of Paige Grimes, Kristen McDonagh and Dana Foley swept the 50 yd hurdles, while Jen Esposito handily won the 50 yd dash. Kristan McDonagh was a double winner, as she also won the high jump. The win now puts the team at 3-0 with a meet against King Philip set for Wednesday at Harvard. Womens Results
| Boys Win Big 59-25Pre-meet
jitters had the coaches thinking that the boys meet was going to be
just as tough as the girls meet. Instead, the boys continued to
dominate the dual meet season with an impressive win over a very
competitive North Attleboro team. Things started out fine as
Brian Ferreira and Matt Collins went 1-2 in the hurdles, upsetting a
very good Tristan Richardson. The 50 yd dash almost was a
disaster for the Hornets, as only Nick King could salvage a point.
North Attleboro, however, took a big hit, as their super
speedster, Brady Shorey, pulled up just prior to the finish line,
managing a second to teammate Alex Witkus, but having to exit the meet
with a leg inury. The rest of the meet went along in Mansfield's favor as Josh Lampron handily won the mile, with Joe Cole coming through with a very nice 4:50.7 mile time for second place. The 600 meters saw Nate Somes again win from the second section, with Ryan Petrella and Griffin Robertson going 1-2 in the first section. The sweep pretty much sealed the meet for Mansfield. Shayne Collins, fresh off his 4:18 mile on Sunday had a very competitive race in the 1000 meters as North's Nick O'Leary hung on until the very last 50 meters. Kham Haleudeth, placed a solid third. The 300 was a nice 8-1 win for the Hornets with Steve Gannon winning his section against Alex Witkus (50 yd winner) and Nick King sneaking in for 2nd place overall with his 2nd section win. The two mile saw Brendan McCarthy score his first Varsity points as the Hornets swept that event with Mitch Negus and Matt Cioe placing 2nd and 3rd. The high jump produced two 6 foot jumps with Brian Ferreira and Patrick Greaney finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Bill Giannouloudis some very tough competition in the shot put, finishing third overall. Mens Results
