After
the intense competition at last weekend's All State Championships, the
Mansfield boys and girls teams decided to low key it just a bit and
have some fun at the same time. The boys 4x800 relay team had
another strong performance, placing second with a school record
7:59.00. The team of Ryan Patrella (2:00.2), Shayne Collins
(1:59.5), Kham Haleudeth (2:05.8) and Josh Lampron (1:53.2) came from
5th place and moved up to 2nd place over the last 200 meters.
This was accomplished by another fine leg by Josh Lampron, who
went out in 57 and came home in 56. The girls 4x200 team of Jess
Verbic (26.9), Jen Esposito (24.5), Emily Broyles (26.8) and Kayla
Comer (25.7) ran a superb race, with Comer coming from behind to win
going down the last straightaway. However, Windsor HS of Ct ran
in the final section of the 4x200 and ran a time of 1:43.98 to
Mansfield's 1:43.99. The Mansfield time was the second fastest in
school history. The boy's 4x200 ran 1:32.13, with Nick King
(22.8), Ian Cauldwell (23.3), Griffin Robertson (23.1) and Steve Gannon
(22.8) turning in fine legs in winning the final section of the 4x2.
Unfortunately, Newton North ran a faster time (1:31.77) in the
previous
section to win first place overall.
In the
individual events Kristen McDonagh won the high jump with a 5-7,
keeping her undefeated high school winning streak in tact. This
was Kristen's best placing at the New England indoor meet. She
also participated in the hurdlers, running 8.85 in the trials, not good
enough to move on to the finals. Jen Esposito also ran the 55
meter hurdles and did qualify for the finals in 8:53 and then finished
fourth overall in 8.54. Kayla Comer ran a 7.34 in the 55
meter trials and then placed 6th overall in the final with an identical time of 7.34
Some of
the athletes will travel down to New York City next weekend to compete
in the Nike Indoor National Meet at the New York Armory.
