Sunday, Feb 7, 2010 - McIntyre Elite Relays
The Mansfield Boys track team had a day to remember as two of their relay teams came home with school records. The 4x400 meter relay team of Steve Gannon (50.9), Ryan Petrella (51.8), Griffin Robertson (51.3) and Kyle Kilduff (50.0) record a school record of 3:24.37, breaking the old record of 3:28.42 set in 2008. The team had a solid lead off from Gannon, running his first competitive indoor 400. He was able to offset the leadoff leg run by Andover's Mark Vetere, who ran a 49+ first leg. Ryan Petrella made some nice moves to bring the team right up to Andover so that Griffin Robertson was able to just sit on Andover's third leg and then move into the lead just before the 300 meter mark. Kyle Kilduff, the old pro of the group ran a 23.0 first 200 and never looked back. The two teams will have a rematch in a few weeks at the all-state meet, if all goes well. The sprint medley team of Josh Lampron (2:00), Nick King (23.3), Ian Cauldwell (23.1) and Jonah Primiano (52.5) set the second record of the day, one that was just established two weeks ago. Their overall time of 3:39.52 was good enough for 5th place overall.

Unfortunately, the girls 4x200 ran into a problem as third leg Nina Monestine's calf cramped up. The first two legs were excellent as Kayla Comer led off with a 25.7 followed by Emily Broyles running a super 24.8 leg to put the girls in front of Boston Latin, the state leader in the 4x200. Boston Latin's third leg passed Nina on the backstretch, but with only 50 meters to go, Mansfield was still in second place with Jenn Esposito running the anchor. After Nina limped in to the zone area, Esposito still managed to run a 26.0 anchor leg.
Next up for the team will be the Hockomock Championship Meet at Reggie Lewis.
Sunday, Jan 31, 2010 - A Good Start! And A Great Finish!
Sunday ResultsHow is this for a nice followup to Saturday's performances: 3 school records, top 10 finishes for 7 Mansfield individuals and personal bests for more than one could hope for. Topping the list was the 4x800 meter relay (Josh Lampron (2:02), Matt Hernon (2:03), Craig Tyner (2:02) and Brendan Boyle (2:00), breaking the 2007 record of 8:14.40 with a very nice mark of 8:07.86. The improvements by sophomore Josh Lampron, who had been sick for much of December, and senior Craig Tyner (2:07 to 2:02) were impressive. Lampron boded his time well in the early going of his leadoff leg, but then came hammering up the final backstretch to put the team into third place as Mett Hernon took the baton. Hernon, running a personal best yesterday in the mile, came back to do the same on his leg, keeping Craig Tyner close to the front. Tyner ran a very smooth 58.8 opening leg and then took over the lead and refused to give in, providing Brendan Boyle a small lead. Despite Boyle's efforts (running a personal best 800 leg), Mansfield finished third, but the school record extinguished any misgivings about their placings.
Ryan Petrella also set a school record, this time in the 600 meter Run as he and Kyle Kilduff worked together through the first 400, covering the distance in 54.2 for Kilduff and 54.6 for Petrella. With only 100 meters left, Petrella moved alongside Kilduff and then powered home to win his section. He finished third overall.
The 4x200 meter relay set the final school record, recording a time of 1:32.76, a time which also places them third in the state behind Andover and North Attleboro. Steve Gannon led off with a fine 23.3, followed by Griffin Robertson in 23.1, Ian Cauldwell at 23.6 and anchored by Kyle Kilduff in 22.5.
Patrick McGowan ran a very smooth race until about 400 meters to go as he was unable to fight off Jeff Bush of Westboro, placing second with a time of 9:25.80. Brendan Boyle won his section of the two mile with a personal best of 9:32.11.
The 4x400 relay team of Jonah Primiano (53.6), Griffin Robertson (52.2), Nick King (52.3) and Ryan Petrella (51.8) ran a very nice time of 3:30.01 good for 3rd place overall.
On the girls side, Emily Broyles is starting to round into 300-400 shape as she ran 40.64 for 2nd place in the 300 (25.8 200) and then anchored the 4x400 team with a 58.1. Jenn Esposito also ran very well, placing 8th overall in the 300 with a time of 41.62 (26.5 200) and then ran the lead off leg of the 4x400 in 60.2. The 4x800 relay team of Lauren Columbare (2:28), Anastasia Lutkevich (2:33), Cassie Olson (2:32) and Anna Dominesey (2:34) ran 10:06.45 good for 8th place overall.
Nina Monestime jumped an indoor personal best of 16-02.75 to finish 10th in the long jump while Kayla Comer place 11th in the trials with a time of 7.58 in the 55 meter Dash.
The 4x200 relay team of Kayla Comer, Laura McHugh, Maria McGrath and Nina Monestme ran 1:50.94 while the 4x400 team of Esposito, Jess Verbic, Amanda Zieselman and Broyles ran 4:07.11.
All in all a great weekend and excellent preparation for the Hockomock Championships in two weeks.
Saturday Results
The first day of the MSTCA Coaches Invitational was a good one for Mansfield as both the boys and girls entered did an impressive job gaining some top six spots as well as getting qualifying marks for the state meet. Starting off on the girls side, Jenn Esposito surprised everyone as she not only cleared a personal best of 5-2 in the high jump, but as a result of no misses going up to that height, she gained a first place finish for her performance. Cassie Olson ran a superb mile run finishing second in 5:20.97 a personal best of over six seconds from her relay performance a few weeks ago. Other good marks were turned in by Lauren Columbare (12th in the 1000 meters) with a personal best of 3:11.05 and Anastasia Lutkevich, recording a 3:17.85 in the 1000 meters as well. Briana Chiusano came off a nasty shin injury from hurdling to run 7.92 in the dash, while Dana Foley (9.59) and Paige Grimes (9.66) got to the semi finals in the 55 meter hurdles. Anna Dominesey (12th @ 1:44.81) and Amanda Zieselman (33rd @ 1:46.82) both qualified for the state meet.
On the boys side Steve Gannon took home top honors as he placed 2nd overall in the 300 meters with a personal best and state qualifying time of 37.15. Ian Cauldwell ran 37.76 for 10th overall. Mat Hernon continues to make impressive improvements as he placed 3rd in the mile with a personal best of 4:34.09. Josh Lampron ran a personal best of 2:41.28 while placing 6th and Patrick Greaney also finished 6th with a long jump mark of 19-05.75, just beating teammate Greg Donahue, who was 7th at 19-05.50. Nick King ran 7.06 for the 55 meters, while Brian Ferreira had an 8.88 in the 55 meter hurdles.
Tomorrow the rest of the team comes back for the championship sections, plus the relay events, so look for some more good marks coming up.
State Relays-Saturday, Jan 16, 2010
Boys place 3rd at State Relays - Girls finish 4thRecords are meant to be broken and Mansfield has been making it a habit of breaking one record after another, almost weekly, it seems. This time around the boys got into the action as two records were broken, both by a wide margin. The distance medley team of Brendan Boyle, Craig Tyner, Matt Hernon and Patrick McGowan broke the school record of 10:45.98, set just last year. The record is now 10:38.34 with approximate splits being (Boyle 3:15, Tyner 53.0, Hernon 2:07 and McGowan 4:22).
The sprint medley team (800,200,200,400) of Craig Tyner (2:03.8), Ian Cauldwell (23.0), Ryan Petrella (23.8) and Kyle Kilduff (50.2) set a new standard of 3:40.98. The old record was 3:46.30, also set at last year's State Relays. A third record was almost captured by the 4x400 team of Jonah Primiano (52.7), Ian Cauldwell(53.0), Ryan Petrella (52.2) and Kyle Kilduff (50.5) as they handily won the event with a seasonal best of 3:28.58, just off the school record of 3:28.42. The boys 4x50 yard shuttle hurdle team placed 4th in 27.98 (Brian Ferreira, Teddy Ferreira, Greg Donahue and Pat Greaney), while the 4x50 yd shuttle team of Kyle Allen, Steve Gannon, Nick King and Austin Meehan finished 7th at 23.01. This was also a school record breaking the old mark of 23.08 set in 2007 (JD Chalifoux, Mike Giordano, Kyle Kilduff, Nate Maxwell). The 4x800 team of Boyle, Josh Lampron, Hernon and McGowan finished 4th in 8:22.56
On the girls side of the ledger the team of Kayla Comer, Emily Broyles, Jenn Esposito and Nina Monestime continue breaking records with another school mark of 1:45.91. The team, minus Esposita and adding Briana Chiusano placed second in the 4x50 shuttle with a time of 25.20 (below the division 2 record, but surpassed by Tewksbury in another section, which ran 25.11. The 25.20 breaks the school record of 25.52, set in 2008. The distance medley team of Ana Letkevich, Anna Dominesey, Lauren Columbare and Cassie Olson placed 4th with a time of 13:14.08. This was another school record, besting the previous mark of 13:21.70. Approximate splits were Letkevich 4:12, Dominesey 64.5, Columbare 2:30 and Olson 5:26).
Saturday, Jan 9, 2010
The Mansfield Boys Track and Field team had an easy time of it in their final Hockomock regular season competition, defeating both Oliver Ames and Foxboro. This ends their dual meet season at 7-1, as their only loss of the season came at the hands of North Attleboro. The Girls team suffered their second loss of the season, albeit by the closest of margins as Oliver Ames won 45-41. The girls ended their regular Hockomock season at 6-2.On the girls side, standout performances were turned in by Jenn Esposito who won the high jump and placed second in the 300 meter dash. She also ran a leg on the winning 4x400 meter relay. Emily Broyles won her specialty, the 300 meter dash handily and then ran on the winning 4x400 relay team as well. Other good performances were turned in by Dana Foley, winner of the 50 yd hurdles in a season best of 7.4. Ana Lutkevitch ran a seasonal best of 3:20.3 to finish second in the 1000 meters, while Anna Dominesey and Amanda Zieselman ran a very strong 600 meters, with Dominesey just moving ahead of Zieselman in the last 30 meters. All in all, the girls gave it a valiant effort and should be excited at the future prospects.

Another
school record for Kayla Comer highlighted a long day at Reggie Lewis
Center as a contingent of freshmen and sophomores braved snowy weather
to compete against the state's other best freshmen and
sophomores. Comer's time of 7.52 was good enough for 2nd place
overall in the 55 meters. Other outstanding performances were
turned in by Jenn Esposito, who finished 3rd in the 300 and Dana Foley,
who qualified for the state meet in the 55 meter hurdles. On the boys side, Nick King and Griffin Robertson qualified for states in the 300 with personal bests in the 300. Brian Ferreira ran a personal best of 8.55, just missing qualifying for the state meet and the team of Robertson, King, Nate Somes and Josh Lampron won the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:40.53.

Mansfield wins double duals vs Canton and Sharon
Both the girls and boys had convincing wins today as the midweek
Hockomock Conference Meet between Mansfield, Canton and Sharon was
contested at Franklin Fieldhouse. The girls defeated Canton 57-29 and
Sharon 59-27. Highlighting the meet for the girls were Kristen
McDonagh in the high jump (5-4), Emily Broyles in the 300 (44.0),
Lauren Columbare in the 600 (1:53.6), Cassie Olson in the 1000 (3:26.6)
and Megan Cole in the extra long 2mile (miscounted laps).
Mansfield had solid depth in most events, enabling some of the older
runners to switch events (Olson, Columbare and Ana Letkevich (second in
the mile at 5:57.9). Some of the younger athletes on the team are starting to show significant improvement where it won't be too long before they make their presence known on the Varsity level. Dana Foley continues making some very sound improvements in the hurldes, as is Paige Grimes. Kyla Comer and Jenn Esposito, along with Briana Chuisano are progressing well in the sprints and 300, as is Angela Garabedian and Julia Jones, both of whom ran impressive 400 meter relay legs (72.0 and 68.9 respectively). Katie Dempsey continues to run well as does Jess Grainger and Kathrine Nash.
The boys results will follow as we get more information.

School Record Set at Holiday Invitational
Patrick McGowan established a school record in the mile run as he
recorded a time of 4:21.73, breaking the old mark of 4:22.44 set by
John Lutkevich in 2007. However, it was Brendan Boyle McGowan
should give credit to for making it happen, as McGowan ran a personal
best 4:24.54. Boyle ran exceptionally well, as he make every
effort to stay with Byron Jones of Westboro (outdoor mile champ), after
Pat Schellberg of Delbarton, NJ ran away from the field early on in the
race. McGowan seemed to struggle a bit in the middle of the race,
but responded well as Boyle pressed the pace. McGowan's last lap
of 30 seconds was the only difference between the two Hornet
milers. Matt Hernon ran 10:16.54 in the 2 mile, finishing 12th
overall, while Craig Tyner, running his first 800 indoors ran 2:08.64
for 14th place.Cassie Olson and Kristen McDonagh had superb performances on the girls side. Olson, running her first competitive 2 mile of the young indoor season, recorded a personal best of 11:34.98, just off the school record, resulting in a 2nd place finish overall. McDonagh, in her first big indoor high jump competition where four girls had bests of 5-4 or better, finished 3rd with a jump of 5-4. McDonagh has three very good jumps at 5-6 (a mark she hit earlier this winter at Franklin), but just managed to nick the bar on the way down each time. The first two jumps resulted in her heels hitting the bar, while she just brushed the bar with her backside on her final attempt.
Both teams will be in action tomorrow at 9 am at Franklin and then a selected group will compete on Wednesday at Reggie Lewis, again.

Just for the fun of it, a few members of Mansfield's track team travelled into Boston to race in the Boston U Mini Meet series. The very fast 200 meter banked oval was a first adventure for the team and a most enjoyable one. Starting off the action was alum Ryan Collins, home from the University of Virginia, who ran a solo 8:22.10 3k.The 200 meter produced some nice times from Ian Caulfield (23.52) finishing third in his section. Steve Gannon finished second in his 200 meter section with a time of (23.68), closely followed by Griffin Robertson in 4th place at (23.71).
The 400 meters came next and Kyle Kilduff won his section in 51.03 with Ryan Petrella in fourth place at 52.91. In the third section former Hornet Chris Szrom ran 51.96. In the fourth section Jonah Primiano and Nick King went 1-2 with Primiano just nipping King in 53.05 to 53.15. In section five Emily Broyles ran a very quick 58.23 against an onslaught of men (she went through the 300 in low 41). Graduate Michelle Jenssen finished 4th in her section, recording a time of 60.32.

What a Track Meet......Both the boys and girls had a terrific battle against North Attleboro this afternoon, with the girls coming out with a great win (49-37), while the boys lost a heart wrenching cliffhanger (47-39).
The boys looked to have things well in hand as the distance group rallied to gain a solid 22-5 advantage. North Attleboro's sprint and field core, however, refused to give in, keeping the meet very close. It eventually came down to the 4x440 relay where both teams have been battling each other for the second straight year. With the graduation of Nick Wade, and the emergence of a solid group of 400-600 runners, Mansfield had hopes of carrying the touch to victory. Unfortunately, North Attleboro did not comply, as they defeated the Hornets 3:43.1 to 3:44.5, thus scoring 5-0 against Mansfield and winning by two. Excellent performances were turned in by Patrick McGowan, winning the mile in a quick 4:38.6 and then coming back to run a 55.0 relay leg on the 4x440 team. Senior Kyle Kilduff pulled off a great double, beating Vlad Francois (one of the best intermediate hurdlers in the state) in the 600 with a 1:28.9 and then coming back with little rest to win the 300 in 38.3. Brendan Boyle and Shayne Collins won their races (1000, 2mile), while the Ferreira brothers, Brian and Teddy, placed second and third in the hurdles.
The girls meet had similar drama as both teams kept up the onslaught all through the afternoon. North Attleboro, as expected, won the hurdles, but Kristen McDonagh and Dana Foley closed quickly to place 2nd and 3rd. A very close race in the 50 went in favor of Mansfield with Emily Broyles and newcomer Kayla Comer were 1st and 2nd. The high jump produced a pleasant surprise as Jenn Esposito joined Kristen McDonagh with a second place jump of 4-10. McDonagh won easily with a jump of 5-0. The mile was a bit of a nail biter as Lauren Columbare, who had some lingering injuries during cross country, ran her first mile ever and managed a strong second place finish that help keep Mansfield close in the team scoring. Another important race followed immediately followed the mile, with Anna Dominesey and Amanda Zeiselman placing 1st and 3rd in the 600. Ana Lutkevich ran a great come from behind win in the 1000 and then the threesome of Emily Broyls, Kayla Comer and Jenn Esposito wrapped things up by winning all three spots in the 300.
All in all, both teams had a very good day at Franklin. They competed well, as did North Attleboro, making for a very entertaining afternoon.
Both teams will take off for the holiday this coming weekend and resume competition with a small group going to Reggie Lewis on Monday and Wednesday and another triangular meet taking place on Tuesday at Franklin. Mansfield Results will be fully posted at this link.
Happy Holidays to all.

Wow! Mansfield Repeats as Div 1 State Champions
It wasn't easy. It wasn't magical. It was a team effort
where every Mansfield runner gave his all for the team and for the
honor of being state champ for the second year in a row. Senior
captain Patrick McGowan did his job, winning for the second week in a
row and defeating Anthony Taylor of Arlington over the same course
where Taylor had given McGowan his only defeat of the year.
Brendan Boyle and Shayne Collins did a superb job placing in the top
ten enabling the Hornets to take the early lead as runners came flying
across the finish line. Back a ways, however, Mansfield was in
trouble. Both Jeff Boyle and Matt Hernon was struggling.
Boyle had dropped far off the pace and Hernon was shutting down
quickly. Diminutive junior Matt Cioe, a born leader, came to the
rescue as he saw what was happening ahead of him. Putting his
head down, he plowed forward, moved ahead of Hernon and just kept
going. He needed to stay ahead of Methuen's, Lowell's and
Brookline's fifth man. Boy did he do his job, beating in
Brookline's fifth man by three spots and keeping a solid distance
between himself and Methuen and Lowell. Meanwhile, Hernon was
hanging on for dear life, fighting for every last step, knowing full
well he was Mansfield's fifth man. Brookline (47th) and Lowell
(59th) already had their final runners in the chute. Methuen's
fifth man was coming on fast. With about 30 meters to go, one
shoe off and hardly moving, Hernon took a tumble. As one runner after
another came flying by, Hernon struggled to get his body back up.
Willpower was all that was left. He pleaded and begged his body to give
it one more shot. Slowly, Hernon willed his aching body forward and
finally walked across the finish line. Methuen's fifth runner was
just in front of him in 71st place, while Hernon finished in
74th. Dejected and expecting the worst, the Mansfield group stoically walked back to their tent, fearing the worst. All that summer work, all the fall training and racing. Was success going to elude them at the "Mountain". Hernon remained near the finsh line, getting his breathing back under control. The team, somber and serious waited and waited. More than 15 minutes passed by before the first wave of news came over to the tent area. Mansfield won! Mansfield won!
A proud and humbe group of guys jumped with joy. They had survived the onslaught of the tough competition from Methuen, Brookline and Lowell. The had stood the test of the "Mountain" and walked away victorious. The final outcome: Mansfield 133 Methuen 137 Brookline 153 and Lowell 158 was competitive to say the least. Congratulations to a super job by a team that worked hard, had great chemistry and came home a winner on and off the field of competition.

For the second year in a row and for the fifth time in six years, the Mansfield Boys Cross Country Team came home win the winning trophy in the Eastern Massachusetts Division 2 Championship Meet. This year the weather played perfectly into their hands as the remnants of Huriccane Ida played havoc with field conditions. The Hornets, tough and determined, ran like sailors as the navigated through the water logged course as if it was a sunny fall day. Patrick McGowan led the onslaught, recording a person best of 16:02, with Shayne Collins, bedridden with the flu for the last few days, right behind McGowan in third place with a time of 16:25. Brendan Boyle, Matt Hernon and Jeff Boyle rounded out the top five for the Hornets. Diminutuve Matt Cioe finished 49 and Ryan Petrella finished 69 for a solid team effort. Mansfield's team score of 58 was the second lowest point total in school history. Concord-Carlisle finished second. Full results will be posted as they become available.

Hockomock Championship
Mansfield Boys XC won their seventh straight League Meet Title at Borderland State Park finishing with the team's lowest score ever of 23 points. This is a 2 point improvement over last year's State Championship team and 3 points better than the 2006 team that finished 3rd in the State. Patrick McGowan was crowned individual champion on the 5K course with a winning time of 16:11. He was followed closely by Brendan Boyle (16:18) and Shayne Collins (16:21) with the Hornets taking the first 3 spots. OA's Drew Beck raced well in that lead pack of 4 that separated themselves from the main field during the second mile. Meanwhile, Jeff Boyle and Matt Hernon were steadily moving forward after suffering mishaps in the first 120 meters of the race. Jeff finished an outstanding 7th place in 17:03 after being knocked to the ground on the gravel and coming up with 2 bloodied knees. Matt Hernon continues to make significant progress as Mansfield's crucial 5th man. Matt grabbed 10th place (17:18) after being spiked on the top of his foot causing his racing shoe upper to split open. Matt also returned to the team tent bloody but battle tested! Perhaps equally as impressive, Mansfield's next 5 fastest guys on the course: Matt Cioe (17:33), Ryan Petrella (17:49), Kham Haleudeth (18:01), Tommy Cunningham (first in the JV race in 18:02), and Josh Lampron (18:07) were all within 34 seconds of each other in a phenomenal display of team depth. The Hornets will be in action again on November 7th at the State Coaches invitational in Wrentham.Final scores were:

61 Oliver Ames
106 Foxboro
111 Franklin

Mansfield Continues March to Undefeated Tri Meet Season
After a much needed week off from meet competition, Mansfield was back at making their way to an undefeated season as the Hornets defeated both King Philip and Sharon by idential scores of 15-50. King Philip managed to hang on for a 27-28 win against a very young Sharon team. Under cooler yet ideal racing conditions, Matthew Cioe captured his first varsity win on the 3.0 mile King Phillip course at the Rice Recreational Center. The Hornets demonstrated super pack running in the form of 2 large groups; placing 17 runners in the top 20. Matt Berluti (Soph) ran the best race of his young career! Five more sophomores/one frosh also ran well in the 2nd pack as Mansfield won both contest against KP and Sharon 15--50.The team now returns to training and preparing for their final league tri-meet against Canton and Stoughton next Thursday at Canton High School.
Hornets Move to 4-0 with Double Win at Foxboro
On Tuesday the Hornets visited Foxboro HS for their second tri-meet
of the season which included the Foxboro Warriors and the Franklin Panthers. Racing only 3 days
after the hard effort at the McIntyre Invitational, the boys ran a
contolled
race that saw Brendan Boyle, Shayne Collins and Pat McGowan cross
the finish line together. Jeff Boyle stayed in the mix and ran yet another 5K
PR
for 5th place. Matt Cioe broke 18 min. for the second time this season,
while Ryan Petrella, Kham Haleudeth and Conor Monks all ran personal bests
for the 5K distance on the newly laid out Foxboro course.
The Horents are now 4-0 and will race again next Thursday, Oct. 1st. King Philip
will host Mansfield and Sharon on the Rice (soccer) fields across from the
Wrentham State School
Boyle Moves into Top 10 Performance List
Unable to field their strongest team for this early season competiton (Patrick McGowan and Matt Hernon did not compete) Mansfield still had a good day as Brendan Boyle broke into the top 10 performance list at Franklin Park. Boyle's time of 16:36 ties him with Kevin Meagher (2009) and Patrick McGowan. Boyle placed 10th overall and was followed closely by Shayne Collins, who finished 11th with a time of 16:37. Jeff Boyle, Brendan's twin brother, continues making marked improvements as he placed 48th with a time of 17:37, his best time. Matt Cioe and Ryan Petrella rounded out the top five. Mansfield finished 7th overall with 259 points. Lowell won the meet with a team total of 143 points.
First Tri Meet of the season is a success as Mansfield wins 2
Tuesday, Sep 15, 2009Moving their home to Borderland State Park was a good idea, as the Hornets took advantage of a course they enjoy running on and handed arch rival Oliver Ames a 19-36 defeat. Placing 1-2-4-5-7 enabled the team to begin their defense of both the Hock title and the State title a winning combination. Leading the way were junior Shayne Collins and senior Patrick McGowan, the two mainstays of the team. Their time of 16:32 was only 4 seconds off the best time run on the course (McGowan last year). Brendan Boyle was only 20 seconds back at 16:58, a personal best on the Borderland course. Rounding out the top seven were Matt Hernon (17:45), Jeff Boyle (17:48), Matt Cioe (17:56) and Ryan Petrella (18:15).
Team scores:
Mansfield 17 Oliver Ames 36
Mansfield 15 North Attleboro 50
Oliver Ames 15 North Attleboro 50
Season Opener at Sheep Pasture on Wednesday Sept. 9
Wednesday, Sep 9, 2009The season opener at the Sheep Pasture in North Easton provided some indications as to what may be ahead for the Hornets this cross country season. The front four runners (Patrick McGowan, Shayne Collins, Brendan Boyle and Matt Hernon) showed that they are good for the season. They all ran up to early season expectations and helped lead the team in victory over Oliver Ames and Franklin. Jeff Boyle, out for his first season of cross country, along with Ryan Petrella, Kham Haleudeth, Matt Cioe and Josh Lampron are all contenders for the fifth spot on the team. Petrella and Lampron are moving up from the track team, with Lampron running his first season of cross country competition ever. Haleudeth is a sophomore and Cioe, a junior, are contending for varsity spots for the first time.
Cross Country Ready To Begin Season
As the summer quickly draws to a close (what summer?) and Labor Day is just around the corner, the Cross Country season is getting ready to begin another fun packed season.Mansfield's Hornets return as the reigning 2008 Massachusetts All-State Cross Country Champions. With all but two of their top six runners returning and a good group of young distance runners on the horizon, hopes are high for another winning season. This year's team is led by senior Pat McGowan, who developed into one of the top distance runners in the state, recording a 9:19 time for the 2 mile during the 2009 outdoor track season.
Joining him will be junior Shayne Collins, who was the top Mansfield finisher (3rd overall) at last year's championship meet. Back for another season will be senior Brendan Boyle and senior Matt Hernon. Boyle brought his time down to 4:31 in the mile outdoors, while Hernon sat out most of the outdoor season due to an injury.
Captain's practices went very well (so we were told) with large turnouts throughout the summer, so everyone should be ready to get back into racing mode. The competition will be very tough as Oliver Ames has a good number returning from last year and also moves up to Division 2 to compete directly with Mansfield at the State Meet.
